08/28/2008 - Royals cruise
past SLP
The Rogers Royals cruised in their football opener against
past Spring Lake Park 29-7 at home Friday night, a game where coach
Marc Franz was pleased that many kids got into the act. The biggest
plays were Tony Cain's passes of 66 and 36 yards to Ryan Heyer, the
66-yarder for a touchdown in the second quarter that made the score
22-0. Josh Carey and Cain scored on runs and Zach Reis scored on a
pass from Cain. "We had four different guys score, and nobody had
double-digit carries, so it was a nice, well-balanced effort for
us," said Franz. Cain, senior quarterback in his second year as a
starter, had a standout game, hitting 5 of 8 passes for 148 yards
and gaining 50 more on 7 rushes. Cain passed to Reis for a 20-yard
touchdown and scored himself from the one, both in the first
quarter, and Carey had the final tally, a five-yard run in the third
quarter that made it 29-0. On conversions, Adam Ahrens caught a
two-point pass from Taylor Barbeln and Austin Koeppe was 3-for-3 on
kicks. The Royals led 29-0 before Tom Brooks scored on a 13-yard run
in the fourth quarter to avert a shutout by Spring Lake Park, which
has won 28 of 33 games the previous three seasons. "I wouldn't
say we dominated," said Franz. "If Spring Lake Park scores first,
they can really drain the clock on you. We were fortunate to score
early." Franz felt the entire defensive unit had a solid game. He
cited Andy Mortenson for playing "extremely well" at tackle while
Jeremy Cole at linebacker was the top tackler, and defensive backs
Jim Dahlheimer, Heyer and Josh Whiting shut down the Panthers
downfield. Rogers will play at Big Lake on Friday.

09/05/2008 Rogers scores
over 50 beating Big Lake 54-20
The Rogers Royals piled up 403 yards on the ground and posted their
second straight lopsided victory, 54-20 over Big Lake, on Friday
evening. Josh Carey led the way, busting away for touchdowns of 12
and 41 yards in the first quarter and finishing with 165 yards in 13
carries. "Our offensive was very impressive. We never punted once,"
said Marc Franz, Rogers coach. "We only had one turnover, on an
interception, and we missed one field goal. Otherwise we scored
every time." Ryan Heyer scampered for three touchdowns, Adam Ahrens
scored on a pass from Tony Cain, and the Royals closed it out with
two TD runs by Jordan Judd. The Royal defensive line pressured Big
Lake quarterback Dalton Heasley, sacking him six times. Zach Petzel,
Andy Mortenson, Joe Meixell and Cory Thomas led the effort. It was
the Mississippi 8 opener for the Royals, who beat Spring Lake Park
29-7 last week. They will host Princeton next Friday.

09/12/2008 - Royals remain
undefeated with 24-14 homecoming victory
The Rogers Royals got star treatment Friday night, and
thrived in it. Shrugging off three early turnovers, the unbeaten
Royals pummeled the Princeton Tigers 24-14 in front of a huge
Homecoming crowd and the crew of KSTP Channel 5, which honored them
as Team of the Week. Ryan Heyer, at times looking more like a
bucking bronco than a running back, carried 19 times for 158 yards
to lead a 288-yard ground game by the Royals, and scored the
go-ahead touchdown on a screen pass. Heyer had one 36-yard run where
he twice shredded a bevy of tacklers and needed three guys to
finally stop him. This was my last Homecoming game, and it means a
lot," said Heyer about the team's success and the attention. Zach
Ries got them going after a poor first quarter when he picked off a
pass and bolted 38 yards to tie the score. Both Royal lines
dominated play as the game wore on, and Austin Koeppe gave them a
big lift at halftime with a 38-yard field goal for a 17-7 lead. "The
kids were very excited to play, maybe a little too excited in the
first quarter, which was a little ragged with the turnovers," said
coach Marc Franz. "I was really happy with how they established
themselves in the second quarter. There was no panic." The Royals
main concern was Tiger quarterback Phillip Klaphake, an
all-conference pick in both football and basketball as a junior.
Franz said the scout team tried to prep the defense for Klaphake in
practice but the guy is too talented and dynamic to emulate.
Klaphake owned the early going. The 6-foot-2, 180-pound senior ran
for a 32-yard touchdown in the first quarter, and stopped two Rogers
drives early in the second with interceptions of passes that were a
bit off the mark, from Tony Cain at the eight-yard line and from
Josh Whiting in the end zone. He also boomed a 47-yard punt. That TD
came after a Rogers fumble at their own 32. But for all the Royals
early troubles, they still trailed by only 7-0. The game
turned when Princeton turned over the ball on two straight plays.
Klaphake finally made a mistake and Ries was there to make him pay.
The third-year starter at cornerback and receiver picked off an
overthrown pass at the 38 and barreled down the sideline to tie the
score. Ries said he just "watched my man" on the play and was
"pretty lucky" the ball came right to him. Then he had a couple
teammates in front of him throwing blocks in the trek down the
sidelines. Moments later, Tiger kick returner Jon Stone fumbled when
hit by Zach Petzel, and Derek Vidor pounced on the ball for the
Royals at the 28- yard line. Three plays later Heyer took a little
flip from Cain and weaved 22 yards for the go-ahead touchdown. The
Royals added a 38-yard field goal by Koeppe as time ran out in the
first half — set up by Cain's dashes of 11 and 14 yards, out of
bounds each time, with the final 15 seconds ticking off. Rogers
didn't score in the third period but was perched on the one- yard
line as it ended. Princeton had stopped Josh Carey short of the goal
line twice, but the Royals went for the TD on fourth down, on the
first play of the fourth quarter. Cain sneaked in behind a nice
charge by the line and it was 24-7. After the first quarter,
the Royal offensive and defensive lines took charge of the action.
That was especially evident in a fourth-quarter drive even though it
resulted in no points. After Klaphake pinned them on the one-foot
line with as perfect a punt as you'll ever see, a 46-yarder that
rolled dead and was downed just before the goal line, the Royals
simply used the lousy field position as a big slate to pad their
stats. They pounded the ball 80 yards, all on the ground, before the
drive stalled and Koeppe just missed on a 36-yard field goal.
Klaphake took his team for a last-minute score, with the drive kept
alive by a late-hit penalty at one point. The quarterback scored his
second TD from the five with 44 seconds left. Rogers and Becker are
the lone unbeatens in the Missisisippi 8 after three weeks. The
Royals will duel defending conference champion St.
Michael-Albertville (which is 2-1 with a 40-39 loss to Becker) there
next Friday.

09/19/2008 Rogers goes 4-0
with victory over STMA
The Rogers Royals two big takeaways by Cody Kielsa, a punishing
ground game and efficient passing to stay unbeaten with a 23-7
conquest of St. Michael-Albertville on Friday evening in St.
Michael. Nursing 17-7 lead, Rogers was back on its heels a bit with
the Knights driving in the fourth quarter, but Kielsa intercepted a
Knight pass in the end zone with nine minutes left. "That
interception was huge," said coach Marc Franz. "They were driving on
us, and Cody had good coverage and made the interception in the
corner of the end zone." The Royals then proceeded to march 80 yards
the other way, gobbling up six minutes of the clock, for a
game-clinching score by Ryan Heyer from six yards out. The Royals
had another strong game defensively, with the line again leading the
way with five quarterback sacks. The Royals kept two dangerous
Knight runners under wraps. Amoah, their season rushing leader, had
one 36-yard run that set up a TD but totaled 42 yards in 10 carrries,
and Dehmer was limited to minus 10 net on 11 carries counting all
the sacks. Another big play was Jimmy Dahlheimer's interception of a
long pass on STMA's second play of the game. Josh Carey scored twice
in the second quarter on runs of nine and six yards — the first of
those set up by Kielsa's fumble recovery at the Knight 38. The
Knights (2-2) fought back to score as time ran out in the first half
on a quarterback sneak by Jason Dehmer. Rogers made it 17-7 when
sophomore Austin Koeppe booted a 28-yard field goal in the third
period. Fairview Ryan Heyer, the Royals' workhorse runner, pounded
for 121 yards in 20 carries, and Carey added 81 in 17 totes. Tony
Cain, meanwhile, threaded nine of 11 pass for 94 yards. The Royals
had 366 yards from scrimmage and held STMA to 172. The Royals will
take a 4-0 record into next Friday's game at Zimmerman. After that,
they'll have Monticello, Becker and Cambridge-Isanti. The Royals
share the Mississippi 8 lead with Becker, each 3-0. The Bulldogs are
4-0 overall after defeating Totino-Grace 20-7 in a non-conference
game Friday. STMA (2-2) had lost to Becker 40-39 in the season
opener.

09/26/2008 Rogers Rolls over Thunder
51-2
Rogers quarterback Tony
Cain tucked in the ball, rolled around right end, and loped 40 yards
before the Zimmerman defense stopped him at the three-yard line. So
began an overwhelming display of ground-pounding football by the now
first-place-by-themselves Royals in a 51-2 victory. Ryan Heyer
blasted the final three yards on that opening drive and the Royals
wound up rumbling for 367 ground yards Friday evening in Zimmerman.
Rogers has solo leadership of the Mississippi 8 Conference after
Becker was jolted from the unbeaten ranks by Buffalo 31-6 Friday
night. Rogers is 5-0 overall and enjoying status as a ranked team
for the first time at No. 8 in Class 4A. In conference, the Royals
are 4-0 and Becker and Buffalo each 3-1. The remaining three games
for Rogers are Monticello, Becker and Cambridge-Isanti in that
order. The one conference rival they do not meet this year is
Buffalo. Zimmerman (0-5) was limited to 44 net yards from scrimmage
and averted a shutout only by a safety when Rogers made a bad snap
through the end zone on a punt. (Actually, Zimmerman had one of
those, too, for a Rogers safety). Cain also hit tight end Joe
Meixell for a 27-yard TD in the first quarter. The Royals then
staggered the Thunder with 30 points in the second quarter. Josh
Carey scored on runs of four and 11 yards, Cain scored on a sneak
set up by Alex Meixell's interception and runback to the one. Joe
Brunn bolted 16 yards for a TD and the safety was mixed in as well.
Heyer with 84 yards in eight carries and Carey with 71 in seven were
the rushing leaders as Rogers had 11 different players carry the
ball. Rogers will play at Monticello on Friday.

10/03/2008 Rogers Crush
Monticello 40-0, BRING ON BECKER
Bring on Becker. That's
the mindset of the Rogers Royals after they demolished Monticello
40-0, with Josh Carey rushing for 184 yards, on Friday evening to
stay unbeaten in six games. Rogers, in its fourth Mississippi 8
footballs season, has never beaten Becker, which won the first two
titles and placed second last year. The Royals will host Becker next
Friday, enjoying a one-game lead because Becker (5-1) lost to
Buffalo 31-6 two weeks ago. The Bulldogs won 14-7 over
Cambridge-Isanti on Friday evening to remain in contention. In the
final week, the Royals will host Cambridge-Isanti. Carey, senior
tailback, piled up 184 yards on just 11 carries at Monticello,
including a 49-yard touchdown. He also scored on a seven-yard pass
from Tony Cain. The Royals pounded the Magic for 317 yards rushing,
mostly in the first half as they opened a 34-0 lead. Ryan Heyer had
62 in 11 carries and two touchdowns. Cain hit seven of 15 for 110
yards and two touchdowns, with Derek Vidor hauling in a 32-yard
score in the first quarter. Backup Josh Whiting hit Cody Kielsa for
a 14-yard score on his only pass. The Royal defense was dominant as
usual, holding Monticello to five net yards rushing with strong
pressure on the quarterback, which also led to an a safety for
intentional grounding. Becker is ranked No. 7 and Rogers No. 9 by AP
voters, even though Becker has a loss and Rogers has beaten common
opponents more decisively. Becker lost 31-6 to Buffalo in a
conference game last week. Buffalo, a Class 5A team that's unranked
(but receiving votes), is the one conference rival that Rogers does
not meet this year. The Bison are 5-1, with their loss coming
against STMA by 35-14. This will mark the first time that Rogers has
played in game where they can clinch a conference championship. A
victory would clinch at least a tie for the crown. The Royals will
still have Cambridge-Isanti the following Wednesday.

08/28/2008 - Royals sweep
Spring Lake Park
After two weeks of hard work, the Royals ninth grade team opened up their
season with a win against the ninth graders of Spring Lake Park on Thursday.
Rogers opened the game with a 72 yard touchdown pass from Matt Weber to
Mitch O’neil to make the game 6-0. With relentless pressure on the Panther’s
option quarterback, the Royals defensive line forced a fumble and Austin
Derouin picked up the loose ball and went 32 yards the other way resulting
in the Royals first defensive touchdown of the year. The name of the
game was defense with the Royals shutting out SLP in six quarters of
football. Rogers would put together another scoring drive totaling 61 yards
highlighted by a Weber 3 yard touchdown Run. Another touchdown was added by
Royals running back Jack McGuire. The final score of the first game was 28-6
and the second game 14-0. The Royals ninth graders’ next game is at Big Lake
High School on Thursday, September 4th at 4:30p.m. Go Royals! |
09/04/2008 - Royals shutout
Big Lake
The Royals ninth graders went to work against the Big Lake Hornets
on Thursday September 4th and improved their record to 2-0. The
royals had five different players score in the 46-0 victory. Once
again the Royals defense showed up to play allowing minimal Big Lake
offensive yards, but more impressively not allowing a single Big
Lake first down. The Royals offensive line had their hands full with
the Hornets bringing seven defenders almost every down. The o-line
responded with a real “blue” collar effort and did a great job. Some
highlights from the game include another touchdown reception the
first play of the game, a Jack McGuire punt return for a touchdown,
the debut of the niner’s field goal unit, and heavy heat on the
quarterback by the Royals’ defensive unit. The Royals will play the
Cambridge B team on Monday at Rogers at 4:30 p.m. and then celebrate
Rogers’ homecoming on Thursday at 4:30 p.m. in Rogers as well. Go

09/08/08 Royal's 'B'
defeat Cambridge
The Royals B team took on the Blue Jackets from Cambridge on Monday,
September 8th in Rogers. The game had its ups and downs but the
Royals ended up victorious in the 48-8 win. The majority of the
points score were accredited to the Royals offensive line and
backfield. The defense had a number of big stops shutting down the
Bluejacket's offense. This game was scheduled to replace a couple
games that are not being played due to other teams not having
sufficient players for two games. The Royals will see Cambridge
Isanti again for the season finale on October 14th in Rogers.

opponent scoreless for third straight game
On Thursday, September 11th the Royals niners put forth a valiant
effort in their homecoming shutout against the Princeton Tigers
resulting in a 39-0 victory. The Royals played four quarters of
disciplined football on both sides of the ball. The Royals balanced
rushing/passing attack on offense had the Tigers guessing with
multiple Royals scoring. The defense really showed up to play
chalking up yet another shutout. This victory improved the Royals’
record to 3-0. The Royals will be in Albertville on next Thursday to
take on the Knights. |

“Blue” collar effort. The Royals offensive and defensive lines’ hard
work was well noted with the quarterbacks and running backs
commenting on their efforts. The Royals defense held the Knights to
minimal total yards and continue to display toughness and desire.

Zimmerman 21-0
The ninth graders went to work on Thursday, September 25th up in
Zimmerman which resulted in a 21-0 victory to remain undefeated for
the season. This was a combined effort as all 38 freshmen on the
royals team contributed to the victory. The Royals adjusted to
Zimmerman’s spread offense in the first quarter and held them to
minimal yards the rest of the game. The offensive line did a very
good job picking up stunts and they were able to score three times
in the game. The Royals will be in Monticello to take on the Magic

Royals comeback falls short in OT, against Monticello
The Royals ninth grade football team faced their toughest challenge
of the year on Thursday in
Monticello. The Magic were toting a 5-0 record in this battle of
the unbeaten. In this game the Royals mounted the biggest comeback
in Royals history. Rogers Defense played very tough allowing the
Magic offense minimal yards in the game. Monticello was able to
score after two unfortunate Royals turnovers that resulted in a 30
yard touchdown reception and a field goal. Monticello’s kicker made
four field goals in total for the game. The Royals were down by 16
points when they got the ball at their own 20 yard line with 3:23
left on the clock. In that time the royals scored a touchdown, made
the extra point, recovered an onside kick, went four and out, forced
Monti to go three and out, blocked their punt, and scored a
touchdown with ten seconds left on the clock. At this point the
game was 14-16 and the Royals needed the two point conversion to
send it into overtime. On a QB keeper the Royals made the two point
conversion and it went into overtime. The Royals came up short on
their series and the Magic kicked a final field goal on third down
to win 19-16. As the players shook hands, there was a definite
demonstration of respect for both teams by coaches and players.
In the second game the royals added another shutout to their record
by winning 24-0. The
Royals will be back in action on next Thursday at home versus
Becker. Go Royals! |
10/09/2008 Niners Back on
track with shutouts against Becker

Bulldogs from Becker. The Royals’ offense and defense were firing on
all cylinders in the 20-0(A) and 24-0(B) shutouts. The Bulldogs attempted
a number of trick plays during the contest but had no luck against
the disciplined defensive unit of the Royals. The Royals will end
their season next week on Tuesday versus Cambridge-Isanti at home.

The ninth graders finished up their season with two
victories at home against the Cambridge-Isanti Bluejackets. The
contest was pretty one-sided with the two games ending with scores
of 28-8 and 28-0. In this game
Rogers had to deal with some
adversity, but pulled through with class. The Royals finished their
season with an overall 13-1 record including 10 shutouts. The
Royals outscored their opponents this year 409 – 41 which is a game
average of 29-3. The Royals made some great improvements and are
already talking about next year. The season will be celebrated on
